Weaving the Threads of Challenge and Hope

Some nights are not meant for sleeping; they are meant for talking to the stars!
Avijeet Das, poet and author

As the new year unfolds, we appreciate our colleagues and friends who have shared their reflections on how we weave together the contrasting threads of challenge and hope:

Joan Lombardi, longstanding champion for children, writes:

“Every new year brings hope. Yet this one is a challenge. From conflict to climate change, from the lingering impact of covid and increasing poverty, it is hard to see the light. Yet we must. Working on behalf of young children and families is the light. It is you who can influence the next generation of peacemakers or guardians of the earth. It is the everyday work of caring for children, for standing up on their behalf, for supporting their families that counts. Every step forward makes a difference. This year more than ever.”

Kim Nall, Director of the Tribal Child Care Association of California, shared this with her community:

“The new year always brings about a time to think, set goals, aspirations and look ahead to what the future holds. New Year’s resolutions can be daunting, and sometimes we set goals too big to accomplish. Perhaps we can focus on personal aspirations versus New Year's resolutions. May we all achieve new heights with our dedication and passion. May we never stop dreaming…may we each remember our ancestors, grace Mother Earth with humility and honor, embrace all our children, serve others with a helping hand and an open heart, may we never forget the path that brought us together and be the leaders who exemplify our shared vision for the future. As the stars light up the sky, may our paths be illuminated with opportunities, our nights be filled with peace, and our days be enriched with happiness.”

And Nancy Rosenow includes the following in her new book, Encouragement Every Day:

“Today, instead of feeling discouraged by the world’s problems, I am choosing to do as Jane Goodall urges and focus on real hope, which comes through action and engagement. My first action is to consider HOW I’m showing up in the world, not just what I’m doing. Then my goal is to look for the next positive actions to take.”

We would love to hear how you find hope in challenging times. Please share in the comments, or email us at [email protected]. We will continue to share what we receive.
