Monday Encouragement: Perfectly Imperfect

If you’re anything like me, you’ve found these past few weeks to be especially intense. Many early childhood programs have been re-opening (or making plans to do so soon), with all the challenge that brings. Our patience has been waning as the pandemic hangs on with no sure end in site. All the important conversations around social justice have been crucial and emotional at the same time.

We’ve been hearing from so many of you recently, which is wonderful. I especially appreciate when you share deep feelings with us - like when you think an article we’ve chosen has missed the mark, or when you urge us to write more (or less) on a certain topic. Your communications demonstrate your commitment to this wonderful Exchange Community and your desire for us to be the best we can be.

With that in mind, I offer one piece of advise I am trying to live by and that I hope might help you: Do your very best, but don’t expect perfection. Work on continual improvement, but remember these words from Voltaire: “Perfect is the enemy of good.”

Our work is very good. We are making lives better for so many children and families. Even on the most challenging days, a smile from a child, a nod of thanks from a parent (or in our case, an email letting us know how one of our Exchange resources has been helpful), can put all the stress in perspective.

Is it a challenging time? Yes. AND it is also a time filled with opportunity to be of great service and to bring more love to our world. Now that’s something worth doing, even if we do it imperfectly.
