Respecting Educators

In the introduction for the beautiful, intriguing book, Cup, part of the Reimagining Our Work (ROW) collection from Exchange Press, Ann Pelo and Margie Carter (authors of the foundational ROW book, From Teaching to Thinking), write: “Too often in our field, the discourse about educators reflects a diminished and disrespectful view of their capabilities for challenging, rigorous, generative thought. ‘Keep things simple and easily digestible,’ is a common caution. ‘Teachers want strategies that they can put immediately to use in their classrooms. Don’t offer too much theory, too much complexity.’

We disagree. Strongly. We believe that educators hunger for deeper meaning in their work. We believe that educators long to be challenged into their biggest, deepest, most startling thinking and questioning. We believe that educators are ready to have their hearts cracked open and their imaginations ignited.”

And in the study guide that ends Cup, Pelo and Carter write: “Find study companions to help you reflect on the story of Cup…As you carry Cup into your teaching practice, may you find energizing opportunities to embody the verbs at the heart of this book: construct, transform, collaborate, imagine, listen, shift, investigate, reflect, theorize, provoke, connect.”
