More Wishes and Memories

Two more Exchange Leadership Initiative members added their wishes and memories for  Exchange’s 40-year anniversary:

When I began Children’s Discovery Center 36 years ago, I was new to the field and searched for resources to help me succeed. Child Care Information Exchange was the resource I valued most. I eagerly read every article, underlining key points to implement. Today I have a library which contains many of the past issues. Congratulations, Roger and Bonnie, on your 40th anniversary. You have played a key role in helping each of us grow professionally, and your influence has enabled us to provide thousands of children with a high quality early education experience.

Ode to Bonnie! I first met Bonnie Neugebauer in the summer of 1979. I was teaching my first course as a faculty member at Wheelock College—an Advanced Curriculum Development course for graduate students. Bonnie was a student in the course. It was the final course she needed for her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. She was a wonderful member of this small seminar type course. Even more, she wrote an amazing paper for her final project—with a title that is the only title of a student paper that I remember in all the years I’ve taught at Wheelock (and still am)…. "Cooking with Young Children—or How Julia Child Learned How to Cook." Bonnie’s paper was outstanding, packed with explanations for how to do developmentally appropriate, hands on food activities with children that incorporated playfulness and food preparation. She explained how it is this kind of play that helps establish the foundation for highly competent achievement in adults. I loved reading the paper. I learned from the paper. And Bonnie received a grade of A+++++.

I knew that Bonnie was going to go on to do important things to contribute to our ability to improve the wellbeing of children and families. How right I was! When Bonnie finished the course, she and Roger moved out to the Seattle area and founded Exchange Magazine. Several years later Bonnie’s unique and powerful paper was actually published in Exchange…And Bonnie has continued until this day to help all of us who care about promoting the wellbeing of young children to find unique and meaningful ways to do so. Thank you, thank you, Bonnie, for being the wonderful early childhood educator that you are.
