After several years of decline, the number of US children living in poverty has been rising steadily since 2000. According to a National Center for Children in Poverty report, “Low-Income Children in the United States,” 18 percent of US children lived in poor families in 2004, an increase of one percentage point since 2000. By contrast, in 1994, 22 percent of children lived in poor families.
