Why is Everyone So Angry?
September 21, 2022
Good manners sometimes means simply putting up with other people's bad manners.
-H. Jackson Brown, Jr., American author
In a recent New York Times article, “Why Is Everyone So Angry? We Investigated,”
writer Sarah Lyall explains how she learned from people throughout the United
States that they have been experiencing vastly increased rude behavior from
colleagues and customers over the past two years.

Luis Hernandez and Connie Jo Smith, in their article, "Disarming Cantankerous
People," (part of the Exchange Essentials article collection, “Dealing with Difficult People”, offer these suggestions for dealing with rudeness in the workplace:

  • Assess the situation and recognize individual circumstances
  • Stop wishing they were different; most people will not change overnight
  • Get some distance between you and the difficult behavior
  • Formulate a plan of action with outcomes and consequences
  • Implement your strategies
  • Evaluate and reassess”
