Anyone who has directed an early childhood program for at least a week recognizes that strong enrollment is vital to the success of a center. A small change in a center's enrollment can make the difference between financial stability and disaster.

But keeping tabs on your enrollment is not always a simple procedure. If your center enrolls some children part time and some full time, a simple head count of enrolled children will not give you a meaningful enrollment number.

To monitor enrollment accurately you need to be able to add up all the hours of service your center is providing and convert this total into units of full-time care. You need to be able to calculate your full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment.

This article will lead you through a three step process for calculating and analyzing FTEs.

Step 1 -
Set Basic Assumptions

Before you even start crunching numbers, you need to define what your center considers full-time enrollment and total capacity. These numbers will be used as the baseline for all the calculations that follow.
