In January, 1999, Mark Ginsberg began his tenure as executive director of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. In his brief tenure, Mark his breathed new energy into NAEYC and initiated a top to bottom review of the functioning of the largest early childhood association in the world. As NAEYC now celebrates its 75th anniversary, we saw this as a unique opportunity to interview Mark about his efforts so far and his hopes for the future.


Exchange: What are the accomplishments that you've been proudest of in your early work at NAEYC?

Ginsberg: There have really been several. I think the major accomplishment has been an agreement on a new organizational structure. This structure not only builds on the strengths of the organization, but even more importantly, I think, it builds on the capacity of the organization, and ultimately on the capacity of the field.

This new structure was long in the making. Conversations about the organizational structure of NAEYC have been taking place for many years. However, I think my arrival at NAEYC may have helped to catalyze a moving towards agreement about a new structure. So I feel really pleased that some of the changes that were proposed ...
