New research leads us back to old times! Grains, in their natural state, unrefined and not processed, have risen to the forefront as important in the nutrition of young children. Just like our grandparents used to do, we are focusing on making foods that have little or no refined products, are real and not chemically altered, and salute the earth and what it brings to us in our daily lives. Grains play a significant role in the USDA food chart, so I thought I would create a granola recipe that tastes good, is not too hard to make, and invites children’s participation. In addition there areseveral end products to be enjoyed!
For the recipe, mix together:
2-1/2 cups oats (not instant)
3/4 cups bran nuggets
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
4 tablespoons wheat germ
2 cups bran cereal with raisins, crushed (place in a gallon zipper bag and let the children crush the cereal in the bag). Remove from the bag and add to the rest of the grains.
Place on a sheet pan in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F to toast for 15 minutes.
In a pan on the stove mix:
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 stick of butter
1/2 cup canola oil
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup ...
