I want to share a few thoughts. Having been one of three daughters (one of whom is my twin sister) and the only talentless one of the three, I feel strongly on the subject of talent.One of the main principles of teaching, in my opinion, is: Teach children to take pleasure in each other’s gifts. I learned this as the mother of three children �" all blessed with some musical gifts. My daughter Miriam �" our youngest �" decided to switch from piano and violin to voice lessons when she was 14. (She’s now 56 and a singer!) At that time I was traveling (as usual) and called home to give my husband my phone numbers (in the days before laptops). My son Steve answered the phone, explained that Dad was still out playing tennis, and wrote down the phone number I gave him to give to his dad and to urge him to call me. When I said “Goodbye now. I’ll be home tomorrow,” he said to me “Wait a minute, Mom.” My 15-year-old son said, “There’s something I have to tell you!” That scared me! I immediately wondered what he might have been up to!
