One poor driving maneuver led directly into the next. Twisting the steering wheel once again, I glanced in the rearview mirror, which put me in eye contact with the driver waiting patiently for my crisis to pass. Yes, she was shaking her head and laughing. I mouthed a simple “Thank you”; but what I really meant was, “Thank you for watching my back.”

Backing up . . . watching my back . . . . Suddenly, I realized how much I needed this particular driver to be watching out for me. And, since it was, on the whole, a rather scatterbrained day, how much I needed a whole host of people to be giving me a little more space than I deserved. How seldom we really pause to notice and appreciate all the people in our lives who watch us and give us the space to back up and regroup when we need it. Isn’t our ability to succeed, ever, at anything, dependent on our back up system?
