Choice is the thing.

I was reading a book of short stories by Sherman Alexie entitled: The Toughest Indian in the World, when I found myself rereading this passage about the relationship between Grace and Roman over and over and finally dog-earing pages 177 and 178: "He loved her, of course, but better than that, he chose her, day after day. Choice: that was the thing."

Interesting isn't it, the things that set your mind spinning?

Even though it felt a bit risky to think about such basic choices as marriage and profession, I allowed myself time to reflect on this idea of choice as affirmation and to raise questions about my own life. Although I think there is much more to love than choice, Roman was speaking some truth.

Is there choice every day in a relationship? In a work life? Indeed, I think there is; and it was with a sense of relief that I realized I would make my same choices again at the beginning of each day.

Whether consciously or habitually, we do get up each morning and choose to stay with our spouse, to do our work. But what is it that enables us to make this choice every ...
